From dev to dev: tips for promoting indie games with 0 budget from Fabian Zech, developer at pheenix93

Today we invited Fabian Zech, a cool and fun guy and developer of Wooden Floor, by the way, the game just got greenlit, to talk about indie games marketing. He was kind enough to give us some tips.

1. So far, what is the game you are most proud of and why?

Even though it's still under development I would say that "Wooden Floor 2 - Resurrection" is the game I am most proud for now. The prequel is the first "real game" I ever released so there's still a lot of potential left for me and my future titles. But so far WF2 is making me proud, at least a little bit. :)

2. Can you tell us, for the developers out there, how did you promote it? Or give out your 3 best tips for promoting an indie game with 0 budget.

I'm no specialist in promoting games, but I think it's very important to make a list of contacts, both people and companies, that may help you spread the word about your game. If there are no such contacts yet it may be a good idea to ask friends for help or simply write to possible supporters directly. The worst thing could happen is getting your request denied. YT Videos, Reviews, Giveaways, ... all those things are good possibilities to get in touch with people and make your project become more or less popular. Rule number one still should be: Stay yourself and make new friends, build a community and be a nice developer :D

And he is all that and more, I might add :)

Game spotlight: Catmouth Island

Game 2 of our Spring Fever Bundle is Catmouth Island.

It's simple: You point and click where you want the character to go, and the same goes for all kinds of interactions. You can choose between two zoom-levels and rotate the camera to get a better view of things.

You play as Mya, a 19 year old student who also has a thing for solving puzzles, and must guide her across the three islands that collectively form theCatface Islands (Catmouth Island being the biggest). Meet and interact with the local population, trek in the mountains and go to the beach; all in the search for that next quest object to complete.

Key features of the game

Over 60 NPCs to talk to, ranging from human to non-human, and around 2000 lines of dialogue.
Unique location based theme music.
The feeling of playing an oldskool adventure game but with a different graphical twist.
Nintendo 64-style low-poly models combined with today's technology. Every human NPC has a polygon budget of less than 300.
Two classes of NPCs: Relevant and irrelevant, with a lot of things to say.
Relevant NPCs can have long dialogue trees.
Episodic progression. Each episode will advance the game and the story through its characters and surroundings.
Just like the old adventure games you can take, use, combine, give and receive items to complete puzzles.
Explore the whole island group from the start. Everywhere is accessible at any time (with the exception of Guinea Peak).
Use the overlay map teleport function to quickly move from area to area in case you are impatient, but will only work with areas you have already visited.
A bit more logical puzzle system that addresses the shortcomings of previous adventure games.
Horizontal camera rotation to look around the surroundings.
A zoom-in function to study things up close.
A highlight-function to help you show what you can click.
A scrapbook with a task list that you can refer to if you don't know what to do in case you should get stuck or return to the game at a later time.

Game 1 of our Spring Fever Bundle is Dark Shadows - Army of Evil.

An army of evil, named "Dark Shadows", have been ravaging the country like a plague of locusts for over a year and are frightening the people with their scary get-up. Most people still think they are monsters. But they are only in disguise. While you were away these monsters stormed the castle. A woman named Katerina has been kidnapped. It is not just any woman. You are in love with her. They’ve also taken all the gold. All the taxes. And weapons! You are the only one who can help Katarina. You must hurry and follow them before they do something to her.

The player fights his way through 19 levels. Various weapons will be available. They can be found in different levels. Everything begins moderately and you need to find some keys and a sword. After the first level the game turns into a hack'n slash game. Most of the time, the player has to fight against enemies. But he has to do also other little things and must solve certain problems. You need keyboard and mouse.

7 TV shows featuring Frogger

Today we celebrate World Frog Day our way: reminiscing about the golden age of video arcade games.

Does the name Frogger mean anything to you? I'm sure you all remember the days you lost trying to direct frogs to their homes one by one by crossing a busy road and navigating a river full of hazards.

The game became so popular it got featured in films and TV series.

1. Frogger made its television debut in 1983 on Saturday Superarcade Cartoons series based on video games.

2.  In 1995 Frogger is mentioned in a VR Troopers episode. Amphibidor is a frog monster who doesn't like to be called "Frogger" because he does not "hop across roads or rivers to avoid cars and alligators just to get home", as he says.

3. Maybe the most notable mention of Frogger is the one in Seinfeld episode called The Frogger. Jerry and George go to a soon-to-be-closed restaurant they used to visit in high school and discover the Frogger machine is still there, with George's decades-old high score still standing.

4. In 2003 in The MTV Movie Awards Reloaded sketch the Architect (Will Ferrell) says he created The Matrix, Qbert and Dig Dug but not The Frogger. He continues the joke saying he named it "Frogger" because it was going to be called "Highway Crossing Frog". That's true, the producers were thinking to name it "Highway Crossing Frog".

5. In 2012 Frogger appears in the Disney animated film Wreck-It Ralph. Go to minute 0:45.

6. Just before presenting the new movie called Pixels at San Diego Comic-Con, Sony announced that Frogger and other iconic video game characters will appear in it.

7. Frogger was also mentioned in the Burn Notice episode Bloodlines, season 5 episode 2.

So many great games out there.
