We had a little chat with Super-Developer Daniel Steer, creator of Terra Incognita. He was very nice and kind sharing with us a few trips and tricks about 0 budget marketing. So, pay attention, dear game makers.
1. So far, what is the game you are most proud of and why?
I'm proud of this game because it is actually my first solo commercial release. After years of working on other games, in small or larger teams and really not enjoying having to work towards other peoples ideas and goals. Terra is in mid beta and is getting great feedback. 0 Negative reviews on Steam and a nice little niche following. I've built a really deep, lengthy story line. I love writing and building an RPG on this scale allows me to write a giant story in a great big universe. I love it!
2. Can you tell us, for the developers out there, how did you promote it? Or give out your 3 best tips for promoting an indie game with 0 budget.
1. Make friends - Build a contact list!
Start building a contact list, don't just spam message game-media journalists. Actually try and build a good relationship with as many of these as you can. Keep in touch, don't spam. It's personally taken me years to get a contact list of around 140, I really try to keep in touch, maintain positive relationships and have become good friends with a few of these contacts. 'Be a nice guy' (or lady, of course) Don't be abrasive or get upset when people critique your game/s. Because it will happen.
2. Never underestimate the power of social media marketing!
Social media marketing is key for building a fan base around your game, Learn to use hash tags properly, target your audience, again don't just spam. Giveaways can give gamers and users an incentive to stick around and come back to your page again.
3. Work damn hard. Don't give up.
A friend and great game developer once said to me "Your game is cool, it's just cool, so stop being a pussy and worrying about what some people think and get back to work. Go and finish the damn game!"
Players, gamers, writers, bloggers, journalists and even friends WILL criticise your work eventually, thank them for their feedback, go into your room and scream into your pillow. Always try and keep in mind, you will never please everyone. A big part of being an indie developer for me personally, is making the type of game that I want to exist. The games I make are almost extensions of myself, the games I played growing up and nostalgia constantly inspire me. When I'm having a shit day, or someone says my game sucks, I push on. It makes me work harder.
If someone posts something that really gets you mad, that upsets or you strongly disagree with, remain polite, heck! Thank them for their feedback and move on. If you don't love making games and enjoy it, you probably shouldn't be an indie developer. Passion and the love is what should fuel you, don't give in, don't give up!

From dev to dev: tips for promoting indie games with 0 budget from Konstantin Popov from Biart, developer of Depth Hunter 2: Deep Dive
We are very proud to introduce Konstantin Popov, developer of Depth Hunter 2: Deep Dive. He gave us a few good tips about 0 budget marketing. Very sure you'll find this very helpful.
1. So far, what is the game you are most proud of and why?
I would say, Depth Hunter 2 is my favorite one. I like its visual style and the atmosphere we created thanks to our new graphics engine. And what is even more important – the game is easy to play. Thanks to this we got a lot of good feedback from our users. We released the game for iOS and Steam last year and decided to publish two DLCs after we got first feedback. Now we are thinking about possible updates and it most probably will be published for Android this year. I myself like the underwater world and I am proud that it looks so realistic in Depth Hunter 2.
2. Can you tell us, for the developers out there, how did you promote it? Or give out your 3 best tips for promoting an indie game with 0 budget.
We had no budget to promote Depth Hunter 2. To start with, we decided to publish some kind of an invite for bloggers and give them free keys. We had a lot of youtube videos from bloggers within the first week. Then we cooperated with press sites and ran some giveaway events. We also used our Facebook page to promote the game and decided to start submitting the game to various bundles earlier than we normally did with our other titles to get more installs and promote our upcoming DLCs.
There's no news that nice video trailers, Steam trading cards, more screenshots are very important to drive the traffic to your site or Steam page.

Game spotlight: KEL Reaper of Entropy
Game 2 of the May Days Bundle is KEL Reaper of Entropy.
Tired of playing the part of a wannabe hero in games? Bored of helping villagers get rid of the local undead? Why not play as one of those undead for a change?
KEL Reaper of Entropy gives you the chance to control (or at least try to) Kel the Skeleton and choose whether to terrorize or please the villagers. Or both for that matter. The game features unconventional gameplay, heinous methods of gaining victory and a non-existent variety of ways to customize your character. Plus an overdose of twisted humour as a bonus.
* A beautiful 3D fantasy world with delicious poisonous berries to pick up
* A stubborn, crooked protagonist to deal with
* Multiple ways to obliterate your enemies (poison, intrigues, stupid accidents, you name it)
* Unexpected twists and turns to your actions
* An ancient relic (Game Manual) to learn from
* An interview with one of the most beloved characters in the history of games
In KEL Reaper of Entropy you witness how Kel the Skeleton, the fabled RPG character, rises once more from the dead near a peaceful village in the woods. Together with him you set out to explore said woods and the village, picking up whatever you find useful along the way. Once you meet the villagers, the fun can truly begin! You'll have numerous ways of messing things up, from manipulating villagers to kill each other to using Kel's special skill of cursing to damage their brain.
Or, of course, you could play nice and please everyone in the village, though Kel might object to that.
There are all sorts of unexpected little secrets to discover, 15 amusing achievements to complete and enough twisted humor to go round.

Game spotlight: Tiestru
Game 5 of our Spring Fever Bundle is Tiestru.
Tiestru is a Unique 3d strategy game where, as the Warlock, you will fight your ruthless and evil enemy called Tiestru. Your sole aim is to save the world by protecting the Crystal of Light and this way defeat Tiestru. Tiestru is an old english word, which is altered to darkness in modern world.
In order to light up an area, you must protect the Crystal of Light also called the core till you destroy all the enemies.
For that you will have to use the power of different spells.
Furthermore, You can combine and superpose these cubic crystals as you want and obtain interesting constructions depending on your strategy and your imagination. With these crystals you can shape the warfare scene as it was your playground. You can use them as walls, or you can make longer paths for the enemy.
But they may chose to crack your crsytals, if they think the way gets too long ;)
In Tiestru, you will test your warlock skills through cities and deep dungeons. With additional 2 different hardness mode, you will be able to unlock the secret levels which are called 'stairs to hell'
and 'devils quadrant'.
Last but not least you have got limited resources. But you can build generators under rarely found light rays in deep dungeons. Then you may collect some extra resources.

Casting different spells will create different types of crystals. You can also make different crystal combinations. All these crystals can be enchanted with a powerline connection to the core! Enchanted crystals are more powerful or stronger depending on their types.
Everything is up to you! Determine your strategy! Just burn the enemy or, teleport them and gain time. Or use build defensive bases, and collect extra resources for a hard bash!

From dev to dev: tips for promoting indie games with 0 budget from Fabian Zech, developer at pheenix93
Today we invited Fabian Zech, a cool and fun guy and developer of Wooden Floor, by the way, the game just got greenlit, to talk about indie games marketing. He was kind enough to give us some tips.
1. So far, what is the game you are most proud of and why?
Even though it's still under development I would say that "Wooden Floor 2 - Resurrection" is the game I am most proud for now. The prequel is the first "real game" I ever released so there's still a lot of potential left for me and my future titles. But so far WF2 is making me proud, at least a little bit. :)
2. Can you tell us, for the developers out there, how did you promote it? Or give out your 3 best tips for promoting an indie game with 0 budget.
I'm no specialist in promoting games, but I think it's very important to make a list of contacts, both people and companies, that may help you spread the word about your game. If there are no such contacts yet it may be a good idea to ask friends for help or simply write to possible supporters directly. The worst thing could happen is getting your request denied. YT Videos, Reviews, Giveaways, ... all those things are good possibilities to get in touch with people and make your project become more or less popular. Rule number one still should be: Stay yourself and make new friends, build a community and be a nice developer :D
And he is all that and more, I might add :)

Game spotlight: Catmouth Island
Game 2 of our Spring Fever Bundle is Catmouth Island.
It's simple: You point and click where you want the character to go, and the same goes for all kinds of interactions. You can choose between two zoom-levels and rotate the camera to get a better view of things.
You play as Mya, a 19 year old student who also has a thing for solving puzzles, and must guide her across the three islands that collectively form theCatface Islands (Catmouth Island being the biggest). Meet and interact with the local population, trek in the mountains and go to the beach; all in the search for that next quest object to complete.
Key features of the game
Over 60 NPCs to talk to, ranging from human to non-human, and around 2000 lines of dialogue.
Unique location based theme music.
The feeling of playing an oldskool adventure game but with a different graphical twist.
Nintendo 64-style low-poly models combined with today's technology. Every human NPC has a polygon budget of less than 300.
Two classes of NPCs: Relevant and irrelevant, with a lot of things to say.
Relevant NPCs can have long dialogue trees.
Episodic progression. Each episode will advance the game and the story through its characters and surroundings.
Just like the old adventure games you can take, use, combine, give and receive items to complete puzzles.
Explore the whole island group from the start. Everywhere is accessible at any time (with the exception of Guinea Peak).
Use the overlay map teleport function to quickly move from area to area in case you are impatient, but will only work with areas you have already visited.
A bit more logical puzzle system that addresses the shortcomings of previous adventure games.
Horizontal camera rotation to look around the surroundings.
A zoom-in function to study things up close.
A highlight-function to help you show what you can click.
A scrapbook with a task list that you can refer to if you don't know what to do in case you should get stuck or return to the game at a later time.
